This is a Model 1864 Cartridge box for a .58 caliber rifled musket from the Civil War. This box is maker marked, with the stamp of RINLOE/PHILAD. on the inner flap. Stamped above the maker mark is the sub inspector mark of A. D. LAIDLEY. The cartridge box measures 7 1/8" wide, 5 1/4" tall and 1 5/8" deep. There is no leather shoulder strap with this box. There is an extremely small amount of crazing, but no loss of leather. The letters US are embossed on the outer flap. The leather closure tab is sewn and riveted on and is in perfect condition. The brass pear shaped finial is straight and tight to the box. Both roller buckles for the shoulder strap are securely attached to the box, as well as both belt loops. This style of cartridge box was designed to be worn on the soldiers belt or over the shoulder. The inner flap for cartridge box tins has a small amount of crazing. One of the cartridge box tins is missing, one is still reporting for duty. The tin is straight and still has a decent shine to it. The implement pouch flap and closure tab are in good order. The stitching is strong throughout the box. This one could still be worn today, it would make a great compliment to a mannequin display!
