This is a Boyle, Gamble & MacFee enlisted man's Cavalry saber from the Civil War. This firm, as well as Boyle & Gamble, were both based out of Richmond, Virginia and produced weapons for the Confederacy. The saber measures 40" overall, with a 34 1/2" blade. The slightly curved blade measures 1 3/16" wide at the hilt and has a spine width of 1/4" at the hilt. The blade has turned black and has a couple of minute nicks on the edge. The entire length of the blade is lightly pitted on both sides. The brass hilt and pommel cap both have that out of the attic dark, almost black patina. It's obvious this Confederate sword has been in an attic or outbuilding for a long time. The guard is in the classic Boyle & Gamble design, but it is unmarked. The two branch guard flows into the knucklebow, which in turn goes directly into the wooden grip. The pommel cap is plain and has no decoration at all. It is notched on the underside to accommodate the knucklebow. The tang peen is undisturbed. The wooden grip still retains some of the original leather wrap on the obverse side. The reverse side of the grip has almost no leather left. The single strand brass wire is still tight to the grip. These are very rare swords that were usually in a leather scabbard. The absence of a scabbard and the missing leather from the grip all lean towards this old warhorse being put in a barn or other old building after the war and forgotten about for decades. While it doesn't have any markings, there is no doubt this is a Confederate sword made in capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia. Here's an opportunity to own a Confederate sword at an incredible price. Act fast, it won't last long!
