This is a Carte de Vista of Ulysses Simpson Grant, Commanding General of the Union Army and later the 18th president of the United States. Grant was born on 27 April, 1822 and died 23 July, 1885. Grant attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating in 1843. He served in the Mexican War and was breveted for gallantry. After the Mexican war Grant married one of his West Point classmates sister, Julia Boggs Dent. They had four children and in 1854 Grant resigned from the Army. He struggled in civilian life, so when the Civil War broke out he reentered the Army. Grant initially served in the Western theater and his forces produced victories at Ft henry, Ft Donelson, Shiloh and later Vicksburg. Once he broke the Confederate siege of Chattanooga, Tn. President Lincoln promoted him to Lieutenant General and made him Commanding General of the entire Union Army. With his new promoted Grant placed Sherman in charge of the Western theater and moved east to confront the Confederates commanded by Robert E. Lee. Through a series of bloody battles and campaigns Grant forced Lee to abandon his Richmond defenses. Shortly after Lee withdrew from Richmond he was cornered in a little spot called Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, where he surrendered in April 1865. After the war Grant was heavily involved with the Reconstruction period. He was elected President of the United States and served in that office from 1869 - 1877. This CDV is of Grant in Union double breasted frock coat with Lieutenant general's shoulder straps. The image is very clear and has a great contrast with the backing. The upper corners have been slightly clipped. The bottom border is printed with "LIEUT GEN. GRANT". There is no back mark on this one. The CDV is in an acrylic case and displays well. This is a very good CDV of an important figure from the American Civil War.
