This is an import Model 1850 Foot Officers sword from the Civil War. The sword measures 36 1/4" overall, with a 30 1/2" blade that measures 1" wide at the hilt. The blade has a stopped fuller that runs 26 1/2" long. The edge has a few small nicks here and there, nothing major. Not sure where this one has spent the last few decades, but it hasn't seen the light of day for quite some time. The blade has the full on attic black appearance. There are no makers marks visible on the ricasso. It appears to be a European made blade, probably German, that was assembled here in the states. The obverse side of the blade has lots of foliate etchings, military shields, flags, an eagle with shield, E Plurubus Enum on a scroll ending in more foliate etching. The reverse side of the blade is etched with more foliate, the letters US, and ending with foliate. The leather washer has been missing from this one for so long it looks like it never had one. The brass hilt retains some of the gilt, but has a dark, aged patina. The left side of the guard has been slightly bent and caused a small hole in the guard. The pommel cap is secure on the tang, the peen looks to hjave never been disturbed. The wooden grip is completely devoid of wrap. Just a small trace of wire remains under the pommel cap. The wood is completely black, looking as if it has a leather wrap still applied. There is a small crack on the bottom left of the grip approximately one inch long. The hilt and grip are still very tight to the blade, little no no deflection. Somehow I picture this sword coming home after the war and being put away, until it was discovered by some long down the line relative. This is a great sword for the beginning collector.
