This is a Carte de Vista of Major General Phillip Sheridan, a Union General during the Civil War. At the beginning of the war Sheridan was supposed to have been assigned to the 13th Infantry Regiment. While he was enroute to that assignment he was diverted to be a staff officer for Major General Henry Halleck. Eventuall Sheridan went on to command an Infantry Division in the Western theater. His career as an Army officer was marked by his rapid promotion to Major General. His close friendship with General Ulysses Grant didn't hurt either! When Grant was appointed as General in Chief of the Union Army he transferred Sheridan from the Western theater, where he was an Infantry Division commander, to the Eastern theater as the Commander of the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac. In 1864 Sheridan led his Cavalry through the Shenandoah Valley routing the Confederates from the area. His destruction of the Shenandoah Valley was the first use of the "Scorched Earth" tactics of the war. In 1865 "Little Phil's" cavalry pursued General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army and was key in forcing his surrender in Appomattox, Virginia. Sheridan went on to fight in the Indian Wars. He played a major role in the development and protection of Yellowstone Park. In 1883 Sheridan was appointed as General in Chief of the US Army. He was promoted to the rank of General of the Army in 1888. Phillip Sheridan died 5 August, 1888 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This CDV shows in a double breasted frock coat with the shoulder boards of a Major General. The image is clear and contrasts well with the backing. The top corners have been slightly clipped. The bottom border has been trimmed away completely. There is no back mark on this image. It is in an acrylic case and displays well.
