This is a Carte de Vista of Major General Benjamin Butler of the Union army. Butler was born 5 November, 1818 and died 11 January, 1893. He was a lawyer, politician, soldier and businessman from Massachusetts. He is best known as a political Major General of the Union army and his role in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. In the Civil War he joined the Union Army. Butler displayed a lack of military skill. General Butler was in command of the occupation forces in New Orleans, where his controversial leadership style caused the southerns to have a great dislike for him. It led to his nickname "The Beast", for which he was always known. Butler's military commands were plagued with financial and logistical dealings across enemy lines. Some of these dealings most likely took place with his knowledge, and he benefited financially. After his failures at the First battle of Ft Fisher Benjamin Butler was dismissed from the Union army. After his dismissal from the army Butler he went into politics. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Massachusetts. He continued to be a controversial figure during his political career, but eventually was elected as Governor of Massachusetts. This CDV is in good condition, having a sharp and clear image. The corners are all sharp and have not been trimmed or dog eared. There is no studio back mark, but written in period ink is Major General BUTLER. The image is in an acrylic case and displays well.
