This is a Carte de Vista of Union General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker taken during the Civil War in 1862. This CDV is in excellent condition with a clear and sharp image of Hooker in a Major General's uniform. The corners of the image are perfect, no clips or dog ears. While there is no back mark or stamps on the front, this bust view is from an image taken in 1862 by J. Gurney & Son at their New York studio at 707 Broadway. The only markings are on the back, being in pencil. The CDV is in an acrylic case and displays very well. Hooker was born 13 November, 1814. He was a graduate of the USMA at West Point in 1837. After graduation he served in the Seminole Wars in Florida and the Mexican War where he earned three brevet promotions. Like many other officers after the Mexican war, Hooker resigned his commission in 1853 to pursue other interests. He returned to the Army when the Civil War broke out, receiving an appointment as a Brigadier general. In the early days of the war Hooker performed well and was promoted to Major General. When General Burnside was relieved of command after Antietam General Hooker was given command of the Army of the Potomac. Hooker was in command when the Army of the Potomac was soundly defeated at Chancellorsville. Lincoln then relieved Hooker of command and replaced him with Pennsylvania native George Meade just prior to the battle of Gettysburg. Hooker was sent west where he took command of the 20th Corps under General Sherman. When he was passed over for promotion during the Campaign for Atlanta General Hooker requested to be relived from command. He ended the war commanding the Northern Department, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Joseph Hooker retired from the Army as a Major General on 15 October, 1868. He died on 31 October, 1879. Joe Hooker was best known for two things from the Civil War, his victory at Missionary Ridge to break the Confederate siege of Chattanooga, Tn. and his alleged fondness of alcohol and women in his headquarters. This is an excellent CDV of a well known Union General from the American Civil War.
