This is a model 1850 Staff and Field saber for mounted officers made by C. Roby & Co. of West Chelmsford, Mass. This officer's saber measures 37 3/4" overall, with a curved blade of 31 3/4". This one has been hiding in the attic for a long time! The blade has turned black and the brass hilt has a dark chocolate patina. That being said, the etching on the blade is still very clear. The obverse of the bade is etched on the ricasso with foliate/ a drum with a banner and stand of flags/a large floral design/a eagle under stars/floral design with a banner reading DIVIDED WE FALL/large floral design. The reverse is etched on the ricasso with C.Roby & Co./W. Chelmsford/Mass. The blade is etched with a large floral design/U.S./large floral design with an acorn/floral design with a banner reading UNITED WE STAND. The spine is marked iron proof. The edge is free or nicks and has not been sharpened. The leather washer is still reporting for duty and the blade is very tight to the hilt. The hilt has the letters US prominently displayed and shows no damage. The pommel cap is tight to the tang and the peen has been undisturbed. The sharkskin wrap is still intact, but the wire wrap has seen better days. The scabbard is complete with both mounts with suspension rings, drag and throat. It too has that out of the attic black patina. The throat, mounts and drag all have the same reddish brown appearnace. The two mounts show slight wear from the suspension rings, so this one did spend some time in the field. The scabbard body a rough pitted brownish black appearance. It is obvious these two have been together forever. With some elbow grease and a quality wire wrap this sword will clean up nicely. But I'll leave that up to you. A good example of a staff and field officer's sword that has been out of action for a long time!
